Nettet1. aug. 2007 · During the Civil War, Union supporters in President Abraham Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois, asked him to speak at a rally on September 3, 1863. Lincoln could not attend but wrote this letter to be read at the gathering by his long-time friend, James C. Conkling. Nettet[1] LS, IHi; ADf and ADfS, DLC-RTL. The present text follows the letter sent to Conkling, which was copied by a clerk from the final draft and corrected and signed by Lincoln. An insertion sent later by telegraph and significant deletions and emendations in the preliminary and final drafts are indicated in the succeeding footnotes.
